Irises are cultivated throughout much of the Northern Hemisphere, including Europe, Asia, North Africa, and North America.

Regarded as a sacred flower by the ancient Egyptians, the iris also played an important role in European history. In its stylized form, closely resembling the fleur-de-lis, it became an enduring symbol of French royalty.

In perfumery, certain iris species are especially valued for their rhizomes, from which a precious material known as orris butter or orris oil is extracted. Highly prized, this ingredient imparts soft, powdery, and refined notes to fragrance compositions.
