ADVICE AND FORMULATIONS
FRAGRANCES are not ESSENTIAL OILS.
They are synthetic substitutes created and used by perfumers.
Fragrances are numerous and diverse. Throughout history, perfumers have crafted their perfumes by taking three essential elements into account: the Top Note, the Heart Note, and the Base Note.
A few words to help you understand the perfumer’s rule:
The Top Note is the scent you perceive immediately. It makes an impression and awakens the senses.
However, being highly volatile, it evaporates quickly, giving way to the Heart Note.
The Heart Note forms the very backbone of the perfume. It expresses itself with strength and intensity.
It is the Heart Note that leaves an indelible, unforgettable impression, one that lingers in the memory for a long time.
The Base Note is the scent that blends with the other two to create that “little something” that may seem insignificant, yet is so important. Indeed, the Base Note, like a subtle scent one might consider unnecessary, will often be the catalyst that sets off a dazzling fireworks display of a thousand sparkling notes...
But when you are just starting out and trying to make sense of all these scents, it is best to follow the classifications below.
1 – CLASSIFICATION BY NAME
Fragrances each have their own specific name. As a general rule, their names are commonly used and recognized throughout the perfumery industry. Before smelling them or blending them together, it is best to become familiar with their names...
So take the time to learn their names, write them down, and then explore their scents.
2 – CLASSIFICATION BY ACCORDS
Accords are grouped into 16 families. Each family is built around its respective Top, Heart, and Base Notes.
Marine Accord, Chypre Accord, Citrus Accord, Cologne or Hesperidic Accord, Earthy Accord, Floral Bouquet Accord, Fougere Accord, Fruity Accord, Gourmand Accord, Green Accord, Leather Accord, Musky Accord, Oriental Accord, Spicy Accord, Floral Accord, Woody Accord.
3 – CLASSIFICATION BY DISTINCTIVE SCENTS
For Arts-Set, the fragrances are simply divided into five main families:
Floral Scents, Woody Scents, Fruity or Citrus Scents, Sweet or Gourmand Scents, and Spicy or Oriental Scents.
By blending these different scents together, you will create a new fragrance. With infinite subtlety and according to your own taste, you will need to combine them to invent a new scent, a new perfume, your very own perfume...
Just one drop, or a few drops, is enough to create a magical transformation!
4 – CLASSIFICATION BY STYLE
By letting your imagination run free, fragrances can easily be classified by style.
Perhaps it will be easier for you to choose them by imagining a particular type of fragrance... But this is only the first step, because as you blend them together and combine them with care, their “Type” and their “Note” will change, evolve, and transform.
What begins as a Classic fragrance may become Oriental, or an Oriental fragrance may evolve into something Sensual. It is entirely up to you to decide what your Top Note, Heart Note, and Base Note will be...
