UNDERSTANDING ODOR PERCEPTION

The sense of smell is subtle, yet fundamental in perfumery. It is not a gift reserved for a select few; it can be learned, trained, and refined over time. Developing one’s “nose” begins with learning to pay attention to scents, to recognize them, and to remember them.
When we smell a fragrance, the brain does more than simply identify it—it immediately connects it to a sensation, an emotion, or a memory. This connection is what makes olfaction so unique. However, this perception is often instinctive. Learning involves making this experience more conscious by taking the time to truly analyze what we smell.
Olfactory memory is essential. It develops gradually by regularly exposing the nose to different scents. Each odor encountered becomes a reference point. The more reference points we have, the easier it becomes to recognize and understand fragrance compositions.
Smelling a flower, a spice, or a woody note repeatedly helps to register its characteristics—freshness, softness, intensity. It is this consistent practice that builds a true olfactory culture.

Practicing Simply:
Training the nose relies on simple, accessible exercises. Smelling a single material at a time helps focus on its nuances. Comparing two similar scents sharpens the perception of differences. Describing a scent in your own words helps structure your thoughts and improves memory.
These simple actions, repeated regularly, are enough to significantly enhance olfactory sensitivity.
A perfume organ is a valuable tool for learning. It allows you to explore materials individually and then combine them. By blending two or three notes, you begin to understand how a fragrance evolves: some scents become stronger, others soften, creating a new balance.
This hands-on approach makes learning more tangible and leads to a deeper understanding of fragrance composition.
Training the sense of smell requires consistency and attention. Over time, the nose becomes more precise and sensitive, opening the door to the subtle and complex world of perfume.
